Gary's New Game

We started a new campaign this past Sunday. Gary, our intrepid GM, has promised to create written annals of our adventures, and has given us an introduction (below), and a synopsis of our first session.

Okay, this won't make sense to some of you. If you have ever took part in a fantasy role-playing game(AD&D, Warhammer, Vampire), there is usually a synopsis containing the going ons of the mis-adventures. I will be posting a synopsis of my own little world. So without any further adieu...

The city of Nuln is a quaint little city, well, not really. It's one of the largest cities in the Empire. Though it is a part of the Empire, it is really nothing like the rest of the cities that fall under the same jurisdiction. Lying on the Empire's south eastern border, Nuln is the first line of defense should the Empire fall under attack from the south lying Grey Mountains . Not so long ago, Nuln was besieged and the city's walls compromised for a short time. Thanks to a small war party with members such as the Cleric of Mohr, Alte, Dreble, the elven wardancer Grey, and the illusionist Rem, among others, the city was saved and the defenses refortified. As always, Nuln is once again on high alert as a rash of strange goings ons, reminiscent of the great battle, once again have begun to worry the magistrate Chrisoph Krungle and his advisers. He has sent out many couriers with news of these occurrences and repeatedly been scoffed at by the rest of the city magistrates and even King Heintrich himself. The five year anniversary of the great battle is at hand now and something is a miss. The well being of the magistrate is in question. Is it paranoia, a power move to gain more recognition for Christoph Krungle to place himself in a better position of authority? Perhaps, but why go through all the trouble of sending out a plea for help in this supposed dark hour? I digress. Perhaps I should give an account of what has happened.

As early as six months prior to the scheduled festivities, strange happenings started taking place. First there was a breach in the wall due to what was labeled a mis-use of black powder. Not very believable, as the breach was large enough to march the entire defenses of Nuln through. There then was the unexplained disappearance of the magistrates lead counselor, Abraham Nichtler. For three days the city was searched thoroughly. While the defenses and guards conducted the search, a sacred object belonging to the magistrates head cleric of Mohr was stolen. An eyewitness has said that they saw a man of slight compact stature quickly exiting the temple before the theft. The gate keeper also verifies that a rather suspicious dwarf left the city and was last seen heading toward the foothills of the Grey Mountains . When questioned, the high priest stated that the artifact was of no significance, but then promptly closed the temple for repairs and went on sabbatical. Counselor Nichtler turned up a few days later with absolutely no recollection of what happened other than a recurring vision of a dark wizard and a dark cloud over coming the city. Then, the attempted assassination of Christoph. It was a quick battle. The perpetrator was struck down by the captain of the guard, Gabriel Shedlan. The question is how did the rat get into the magistrate's chambers, let alone the city limits? Last, but not least, is the strange rash of plague-like illness that has been running rampant in the slums. Normally no one would pay this any bother, but when there are stories of drunkards sprouting new eyes and other such things, one takes notice, even if your sources are volvox laden vagrants who are infected with a strange illness.

A missing artifact, a missing counselor, a mythical rat assassin, and rumors of mutation and plague? All on the eve of the anniversary of the great battle. Coincidence? One could only hope. Truthfully, no one knows what is going on. Even if they do know, no one is talking. Who is behind the assassination attempt? Is it a random act of loathing from a chaotically unpredictable race? What was the artifact and who stole it? Why an artifact of Mohr? Why did the cleric leave so abruptly and where did he go? Is there mutation or is it just the deranged ramblings of the plague ridden slum inhabitants? What do Abraham Nichtler's visions/dreams mean? Are they a foreshadowing of the events to come?
