Gary's New Game

We started a new campaign this past Sunday. Gary, our intrepid GM, has promised to create written annals of our adventures, and has given us an introduction, and a synopsis of our first session (below).

The continuing saga...

The Anniversary of the Great Battle of Nuln is at hand. The streets are busy and the taverns are overflowing with ale and mead. At the main gate of the city people are coming and going, though most coming. An elf is leading her nutmeg colored steed through the gates and asks where she might find "more of her kind". The gate-keeper points her toward the slums and goes about his business. The elf is in total awe at how fast and abrupt the city life is. She makes her way toward the slums. She is rather taken aback by the sight of a parrot that seems to be intoxicated stumbling out of a small tavern named the Adder Root Inn. She herself has a love for animals, as she has a hawk perched on her shoulder, but who would dare show there affection to a parrot by getting it intoxicated?

Spying through the door, our elf is able to see a small group of elven fighters with brightly colored, overly flamboyant hair designs standing at the bar. She enters, looking around with eyes wide open to the debauchery surrounding her, and takes a seat at the bar. She takes quick note of a few of the more interesting personas. There is another elf taking in the atmosphere, what looks to be a female human who apparently has a drug abuse problem, and another strange figure at the end of the bar with a hood over their head so as not to reveal any hint of who/what he/she is. Getting the tavern keepers attention, a glass of the finest wine is ordered by our elf. A glass of ale arrives in its stead. A minor disruption about the lack of wine, has made the elves sitting next to her rather ruffled and less likely to want to associate with her. A white hooded, black cowled pointy ear approaches and asks for bourbon. A shot is poured, the individual asks for a clean glass, is rewarded with a spit washed one and downs the drink. Admiring the hawk that is still perched on the females shoulder, he strokes it and ever-so gently removes a small piece of feather. While doing so, he notices that the hawk has only one eye. He pours another shot, then dumps it into the females ale. She has a dumbfounded look on her face. As she is about to question this stranger about his actions, a very lively tune breaks out. Never being the one to turn a blind eye to an opportunity to express oneself through dance, the female rises and begins to dance.

As she rises, her hawk makes a small bit of sound as if to say " how dare you do this while I am still on your shoulder". She turns to see what looks like a large cloud of white dust fly into the air and a rather odd female warrior start the most odd looking dance that has ever been seen. Another elf, with long flowing blonde hair has begun to dance a little jig as well. Wondering if this is the life of the big city, she attempts to keep a watchful eye on all but not to the point of focusing on a single object or person. The hooded figure at the end of the bar has now jumped onto the bartop and is performing a sort of riverdance and making their way down to the other elves that are still standing at the bar. The blonde haired elf that is currently dancing with her introduces himself as Cutter. She begins to introduce herself, she notices that the figure on the bar has begun a brew-haha by kicking one of the three elves at the bar in the face. Weapons are drawn, tempers begin to flare. The music stops. All sound stops. A strange quiet has come over the tavern. Almost an other worldly quiet. The cowled figure that has been "grooming the hawk", once again removes a feather and looks around to see what is going on. The figure on the bar gives a recognizing stare and vaults off the bar. The cowled one exits rather steadfastly form the establishment with the hooded figure not too far behind. The music begins again and the three elven warriors collect themselves and give chase to the one that attacked them. Cutter joins the chase leaving the odd human female and the hawk carrying elf behind.

Our elf grabs her steed, Nutmeg, and cautiously follows the general direction of the fracas. She is followed by the rather shaky female. They come upon what looks to be the start of the quarrel between the group. The hooded figure is dancing around the cowled figure and keeping him from advancing in any direction. Cutter, is conversing with what is referred to as wardancers, the flamboyant elves from the bar. Remarks are made that this is not any business of Cutter's. Cutter replies that they are disgraces and how dare they bring shame to the wardancers of the Loren. The hooded ones attention is drawn away from the cowled figure thanks to these remarks. In that instant the cowled figure takes flight, literally, and lands on a near by rooftop to take in the actions of the group. A loud bang is heard, and to the horror of the female elf, a wardancer's head explodes. This can easily be explained by the pistol Cutter is now lowering to his side. The rooftop watcher has seen enough and calls upon the powers of wind to stop this insanity. His targets are forced to the ground, and after some chit chat and some reassurances that there will be no more blood shed, the spell is disbanded. At this time our hooded figure removes his cover to reveal pointy ears and long white hair. He seems small for a elf. Introductions are made. He is Regis and is currently investigating the occurrences that the magistrate has been so worried about. The cowled one makes his way down and introduces himself as Kartero Oneiri, a cousin to the illusionist hero Rem. He was down in the slums following a tip that Rem was seen in the area. Our female elf, who has yet to properly introduce herself, probably because of the barbaric events that she has witnessed, begins a rant on the life of elves and how blood thirsty and barbaric these elves are and how she wants nothing to do with them.

Regis reads Cutter the riot act on killing a wardancer, though if it were a real wardancer, the shot would have never been fired, and continues the discussion as the brute squad arrives. The brute squad consists of an overgrown human, or an under-grown giant named Yosh bin Yoseph. A little slow on the uptake, Yosh is told that the situation has been handled and there is no need for him. Yosh turns to leave and spies the female elf's horse, Nutmeg. With a heavy hand, Yosh pets nutmeg. Unfortunately, the horse is knocked unconscious and falls to the ground with its rider. Regis asks for all of them to join him at the magistrates mansion in one hour. Reluctantly, they agree. Cutter and the human disappear together stating that they will meet the rest of the party at the magistrates. Kartero and our fem elf are shown to the best inn in the city. The rooms are overpriced, but this is to be expected, with the celebration about to begin. They receive their meals, and receive a knock on their doors. They are greeted by a dwarf stating that he is there to escort them to the magistrates safely. He suggests to the fem elf that she wear something a little more flashy. Taking his advise, she proceeds to tie multiple scarfs around various parts of her body. She looks quite silly really. She and Kartero arrive along with their escort at the magistrates to find a heightened security presence. As they pass through the gate they are met by Cutter and the human female Lise. Surprisingly, they are both clean and Lise seems a bit on edge.

Being led by the dwarf, who has now become more than annoyed by the elves, the party is placed in a large room that at first glance looks like a library. After being in this room for an amount of time that is far too long, the party finds that the windows are barred and the doors are locked, save for one. The group open the door and make their way down the corridor to an ornately decorated door with a large gargoyle knocker. Entering, they find Christoph Krungle waiting. Krungle makes them an offer that they of course cannot refuse. If they do, then imprisonment is a certainty. All but the fem elf are in. She however takes a little bit of persuading. Promises of gold, wine, weapons, volvox, clothing, and better living arrangements are made. In the end, it is the fact that the group will finger her for the killing of the "wardancer" that does the trick. The party is taken the the magistrate's quarters where the assassination attempt was made. The conclusion is that the assailant made its way onto the grounds through a sewer in the courtyard. Krungle relays that papers will be issued to them allowing for freedom to do what is necessary to get the job done. The party decides to return to the Robin Red Breast Inn to rest before taking on the task at hand.

Kartero sleeps, Cutter goes out to investigate some leads, Lise continues her volvox binge and sharpens and shines her weapons. The female elf steps out, deciding that she wants nothing to do with the events to come, and heads to the stable. Checking on her horse, she is rather upset to find that Nutmeg has been permanently brain damaged by the friendly hand of Yosh, and unable to be ridden. After talking to the stable hand she discovers that the owner may not be in tomorrow and she may not be able to purchase a new horse for quite some time. She returns to her room. The papers that the magistrate promised arrives. They read as follows:

Please afford to the bearer of this writ the courtesy that would be given to the highest ranking officials of the city of Nuln .

This writ is in accordance to the following. The bearer must renew this writ monthly.

The bearer must, in order to leave the city limits, have another writ and be escorted out by the proper authorities.

The bearer of this writ may under no circumstance be arrested or detained unless the guidelines of this writ are broken.

Magistrate Christoph Krungle

Dejected, the fem elf decides to sleep. Morning comes. Cutter returns as the sun is breaking the horizon. Everyone but he receives breakfast. Kartero heads to armory to find that the item he is given is not even close to what he wanted. He makes his way to the magistrate and is told to return to the armory in an hour. At this time he is also given half of the agreed upon amount for his services.Lise joins the fem elf in the city green where they encounter a rather disturbing dwarf wearing high heels, carrying a table, a chair, a mouse, a cat, and a monkey. After breaking through the language barrier, a deal is struck for the mouse so that her hawk can feed. Kartero returns and gathers his new short sword. Kartero, who is randomly mistaken for his cousin Rem joins them in the green and awaits the arrival of Cutter. Cutter awakens and bathes. After eating, he makes his way to the magistrate. He is told that he doesn't have to see Krungle and that he can be helped by a lower official. Cutter receives a portion of his stipend and returns to the green with the information that he acquired last night.

He arrives and explains that he went out and checked the temple. He found the temple to be isolated from the rest of the surrounding are. The door was unlocked. He entered and found offices in the back of it. Searching for another door he found an additional altar in a basement. On the altar was a book and a blank area where it seems that there was an item missing. He could conclude this due to the lack of dust in a very distinct area on the table. Cutter then also made note that there were sewer entries near to the temple as well as in the magistrates courtyard. After taking much convincing of the fem elf, that it is necessary to investigate the sewer, the group gathers there belongings and prepare for their delve into the sewers of Nuln.
